COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Jan. 17, the Davis Farmers Market began its 50th anniversary celebration and will host a major community event on Aug. 1. The market runs Saturdays 8 a.m. — 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. from October through April, marking its longstanding local tradition.  The California Aggie

CULTURE NEWS

  • Davis students are celebrating sweater weather by mixing thrifted vintage finds and self-made designs to brighten chilly days. They join campus fiber arts clubs + explore creative techniques that boost confidence and spread warmth.  The California Aggie
  • On Jan. 21, the WRRC + MENASA Resource Center hosted a conversation on Western beauty standards at the Student Community Center, where attendees discussed identity, media influence, and cultural expectations. Organizers planned future social and workshop events to continue these community dialogues.  The California Aggie
  • On Jan. 14, the UC Davis Department of English hosted Vietnamese-American poet Cathy Linh Che in its annual Creative Writing Series. She showcased her short documentary film (We Were the Scenery) and read from her latest poetry collection, Becoming Ghost, a finalist for the National Book Award in Poetry.  The California Aggie
  • The Netflix film People We Meet on Vacation has sparked discussion among local students about keeping the film close to the book while allowing creative changes. Some praised the actors' work, while others said the scenes felt rushed; the movie premiered Jan. 9 and is still stirring debate on adapting stories.  The California Aggie
  • A beginner’s guide highlights six translated works by female authors available at Yolo County Library, offering a fresh look at international literature as the number of women authors in translation rises (titles include culturally diverse stories from Finland, France, India, Taiwan, Japan, and Denmark).  The California Aggie

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UC Davis professors Megan Dennis and Siobhan Brady, both first-generation scholars, will discuss their research and mentoring experience on Face to Face with Chancellor May this month, highlighting advances from zebrafish genetics to plant resilience & federal research support.  UC Davis
  • This February, Crowdfund UC Davis (its record 51 teams) will launch a monthlong donation campaign on GiveCampus, inviting campus members to support projects from robotics training to affordable veterinary care. The initiative will highlight innovative efforts across the university and health sectors.  UC Davis
  • Date Drop is a free matchmaking web app that has launched at UC Davis, providing students with one curated match every Tuesday. Davis Consulting Group is partnering with the company to support its marketing and help build genuine campus connections.  The California Aggie

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Davis announced the release of its updated bike map today to highlight a comprehensive network of bike lanes, shared-use paths, and off-street trails (designed to help riders navigate their routes).  The Davis Enterprise

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Garen Wintemute, a UC Davis emergency physician and gun violence researcher, was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine in October and continues to study gun violence as a health problem (he believes understanding violence as a health behavior can lead to better safety policies).  UC Davis

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Jan. 9, UC Davis Athletics announced that for the 2026-27 season the equestrian team will become a club sport while the STUNT team is promoted to varsity status. The equestrian team will hold home meets on Feb. 6 and Mar. 7 at the Equestrian Center.  The California Aggie
