  • Crazy D’s Hot Chicken opened its new Downtown location on G Street on Jan. 31. The franchise, popular with college students and bar-goers, preserved parts of the historic Woodstock’s building (the former site of Woodstock’s Pizza) and hosted a UC Davis engineering fundraiser on Feb. 23.  The California Aggie

CULTURE NEWS

  • Violet Zanzot explains that regular reading boosts empathy and creativity in her column published today, urging community members to rediscover books as a fun way to keep their minds sharp.  The California Aggie
  • UC Davis students warned that Ticketmaster’s rising ticket prices — coupled with a trend in AI music — may limit access to live shows as one student described the pricing as a scam. They stressed that human-generated music remains a key part of the musical experience.  The California Aggie

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students often wear headphones on campus so they feel safe & relaxed in busy hallways; some faculty say the habit could limit face-to-face interactions while helping manage stress.   • Cyclone RoboSub, a student-run robotics team at UC Davis, will compete in an international underwater contest in Irvine this summer. The team, founded (in 2022), includes over 50 members and is using Robot Operating System to boost performance.  The California Aggie

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two UC Davis alumni launched OVO, a plant-based menstrual hygiene company offering plastic-free pads that reduce waste and protect community health. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Davis released its updated bike map today, which shows new bike lanes, shared-use paths, and guidance on e-bikes and e-scooters (including safety rules and California regulations). Copies are available at City Hall, the Senior Center, the library, and local bike shops.  The California Aggie
  • Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency received $500,000 in state grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety to support child, bicycle and pedestrian safety programs — a move expected to boost community travel safety.  The Davis Enterprise

HEALTH NEWS

  • In November, UC Davis Health became the first to use Abbott’s G5 MitraClip and TriClip device to repair leaky heart valves with a minimally invasive procedure, allowing patients like 86-year-old James Young to recover in days. This breakthrough offers a safe alternative when open-heart surgery poses high risks.  The California Aggie
