  • Frenzy Coffee Co. opened at 305 1st Street in Davis and drew a large crowd during its soft opening earlier in March while offering unique drinks and a study-friendly space; it held its grand opening on March 30 with giveaways and merchandise — the cafe now invites locals to enjoy its creative menu.  The California Aggie

CRIME NEWS

  • Davis Mayor Bapu Vaitla and Police Chief Todd Henry released a statement Sunday after a shooting at Community Park injured three people on Saturday.  The Davis Enterprise
  • Students at Patwin Elementary were locked down briefly Monday afternoon after an alleged assault at a nearby West Davis apartment complex—authorities investigated the incident.  The Davis Enterprise

CULTURE NEWS

  • Davis Odd Fellows hosted their bi-annual Classic Film Festival this spring in Downtown Davis with screenings of Doris Day films, including the March 30 debut of 'Pillow Talk' and subsequent showings on April 6 and April 13 — each event offering free admission and popcorn. Local film critic Derrick Bang led discussions before and after the films to share background and insights with the community.  The California Aggie

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fourth year political science major Nava Regev plans to graduate this spring and will take a gap year to study for the LSAT and work in a legal setting before applying to law school near Davis. She said her time at Davis taught her independence and built lasting friendships (memories from her off campus home) that will shape her future.  The California Aggie

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Mike Thompson announced today that Anthony Roberts, chairman of the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, has been named the 2025 Yolo County Climate Crisis Champion—an honor that recognizes his leadership on improving local environmental efforts.  The Davis Enterprise

HEALTH NEWS

  • UC Davis researchers developed a new drug called JRT by swapping two atoms in LSD to lower its hallucinogenic effects while keeping its ability to promote brain cell growth. Early tests in mice showed that JRT increased dendritic spine density by 46% and synapse density by 18% + it may help treat schizophrenia as well as other brain disorders.  UC Davis
  • A new UC Davis study found that sauerkraut helped keep intestinal cells strong in lab tests while raw cabbage and its brine did not, and both lab-made and store-bought versions showed the same benefit. The researchers now plan to begin human trials to see if adding sauerkraut to regular meals can lower inflammation and support gut health—findings published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology.  UC Davis

  • A New York Times Magazine piece by Conor Dougherty argues that allowing more housing sprawl may help fix America's housing crisis by building many new homes, and his view has sparked debate among Davis leaders and residents.
