  • On Picnic Day weekend, UC Davis held its ninth annual Give Day where over 4,100 donations raised nearly $4.5 million — surpassing last year’s record; the new giving platform now lets donors use Apple Pay and Google Pay and set up monthly gifts.  UC Davis

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, UC Davis announced new appointments including geophysicist Amanda Thomas as the inaugural Louise H. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Earth and Planetary Sciences, Professor Chen-Nee Chuah as co-director of the AI Center in Engineering, and Nicole Tardiff as the new director of Contracts and Grants Accounting—other leadership roles were filled in CITRIS UC Davis and the School of Law.  UC Davis
  • Students at UC Davis are voting in the spring election from April 21 at 8 a.m. to April 25 at 8 p.m. as candidates from multiple slates propose plans for safety, equity, and transparency—focusing on enhanced campus resources and support.  The California Aggie
  • UC Davis students will present research at the free Undergraduate Research Conference on campus next Friday and Saturday with poster presentations on Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the University Credit Union Center and oral presentations on Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at Wellman Hall—Natasha Bibbs of Sacramento, who traveled 2,000 miles to Louisiana during spring break to explore her family history, will join over 1,000 students in what is set to be a record participation event.  UC Davis

  • ASUCD elections run from April 21 to 25 as the Editorial Board endorses candidates for key roles such as the presidential ticket, external affairs vice president, and senators—while urging students to vote yes on Amendment #94 to reform interim appointments.  The California Aggie
  • At the April 15 meeting, four of five Davis City Council members supported using extra Measure Q funds to repair roads and bike paths — while Vice Mayor Neville and Mayor Vaitla urged examining new tax options. The council told staff to recommend a $14 million annual budget for the pavement program in 2025-26 and 2026-27 to address mounting repair costs.  Davis Vanguard
  • UC Davis professor Stephen Wheeler criticized Davis’ zoning and housing policies, saying the city missed opportunities—such as the one-story University Mall project and the I‑80 widening—to build denser, sustainable homes that support affordable, climate-friendly living.  Davis Vanguard

HEALTH NEWS

  • UC Davis researchers and experts explain that whole, processed and ultra-processed foods differ—with ultra-processed products designed to boost sales rather than nutrition, which can lead to overeating and health problems—and lawmakers are debating new guidelines for public school meals to reduce artificial additives. The study highlights that clear definitions are needed so consumers can better understand the impact of these foods on their well-being.  UC Davis
  • A UC Davis podcast examined the science behind processed foods and noted that California lawmakers are now debating whether ultra-processed foods should be banned in public schools due to concerns over chronic health issues & behavioral effects in children.
