COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gustavo Landeros Mireles, a UC Davis graduate and owner of Churros El Rey (located at 228 E Street), runs his popular churro stand in downtown Davis and fights against the harassment of street vendors while perfecting his recipes throughout the day. He is studying for law school to better protect his community’s vendors (operating Friday to Sunday from 7 to 11 p.m.) as he works to secure the necessary permits for a permanent operation.  The California Aggie

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Show Izakaya, a new Japanese restaurant at 102 F St, opened recently by local couple Wendy Wu and Damon Bai to bring an authentic izakaya experience to Davis. The restaurant occupies part of the former Season’s Kitchen & Bar and will share the space with Orangetheory Fitness (opening in May or June), offering a menu of fresh rolls, ramen, and other Japanese dishes in a relaxed setting.  The California Aggie

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 12, at Community Park during Picnic Day, multiple shooters wounded a 24-year-old and two teenagers at a Phi Beta Sigma block party—police confirmed the incident does not pose a continued threat and that the investigation is still active.  The California Aggie

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Recent actions by UC Davis’ OSSJA have sparked disagreement among fraternity members who say the rules blur the line between official and informal gatherings—fraternity leaders including those from Sigma Chi and Alpha Epsilon Pi call for greater involvement by the student IFC to ensure fair investigations. The dispute highlights the challenge of balancing campus safety with fraternity members’ rights as Greek life continues to evolve.  The California Aggie
  • For five years, UC ethnic studies faculty and students worked to add a required ethnic studies course for admission, but on April 23 the Assembly voted 29 to 12 to block the proposal from reaching Regents and President Michael V. Drake—faculty said the vote was done in an unusual way.  The California Aggie
  • UC Davis students presented their work at the 36th Undergraduate Research Conference held on April 25 and 26—over 1,000 students shared research in posters, art, and oral sessions that covered topics from digital media to environmental economics. The event offered students a chance to display their projects and gain valuable experience with professionals in their fields.  The California Aggie
  • The Yolo County Grand Jury released a report this week raising concerns about school safety in Davis Joint Unified School District and urged improved cameras, locked classroom doors and a new fencing project—measures needed to address campus vulnerabilities. Davis Joint Unified said it will review the findings and respond in 90 days under state law.  Davis Vanguard
  • UC Davis philosophy professor Mark Reiff warned in a Zoom interview that liberal institutions including academia failed to counter fascism by relying only on facts instead of emotion and narrative. He explained that fascism is built on a strict idea of 'the people' — a view that excludes many and weakens democratic checks.  Davis Vanguard

  • Aggie Mental Health Ambassadors will merge with the Student Wellness Liaison program under the Health Education and Promotion team in Student Health and Counseling Services after a petition protested reports of program defunding—supervisors confirmed that no jobs will be lost.  The California Aggie
