COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yolo County’s Health and Human Services Agency is celebrating National Bike Month this May by hosting bike safety events and community rides—residents are encouraged to participate and ride for improved safety and fun.  The Davis Enterprise
  • A community meeting will be held today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Game Room at the Veterans Memorial Center — local residents will discuss plans for the new skate park — to decide on its design and build.  The Davis Enterprise
  • The Davis Chamber of Commerce is marking 120 years and the city and UC Davis have worked together since 1908 on housing, rides, and safety projects—helping Davis get through good and hard times. The groups will plan upcoming events like Aggie Day, Bike Month, and the Whole Earth Festival to show their shared commitment.  UC Davis
  • Aggie Square opened on May 2 as a new innovation district that blends public, university, and private spaces to support local collaboration—upcoming events include an open house on May 15 and a speaker series starting May 12.  UC Davis

CRIME NEWS

  • Testimony began in the Davis double-homicide trial as court officials recounted that on April 29 at 9 p.m. Matthew Massie was working on a home project with his back door ajar — a detail that stirred early commotion — while evidence is reviewed.  The Davis Enterprise

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 6—7 the UC Davis Department of Chemistry held its Miller Symposium where students, teachers and well-known scientists such as Jennifer Doudna and Frances Arnold talked about new research on gene editing and enzyme work. The event also confirmed UC Davis’ partnership with the Innovative Genomics Institute and gave a $6,000 grant to Cici Zhai for her new method to study the spine.  The California Aggie
  • Graham Coop, a professor of evolution and ecology at UC Davis and director of the Center for Population Biology, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on April 23 for his notable work in evolutionary genetics—his research has helped clarify human ancestry and evolution. He joins 36 other UC Davis faculty whose contributions have been recognized by the academy.  UC Davis

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Editorial Board reported that the ASUCD spring 2025 elections were marked by a lack of clear information—multiple candidate disqualifications and technical issues led to conflicting vote counts posted on social media and the elections website. The Elections Committee has not yet provided a full breakdown of the votes, leaving students and candidates with uncertainty about the final results.  The California Aggie
  • Last week, the University of California Pavement Research Center repaved 1.1 miles of campus road near the University Airport using innovative pavement materials made from recycled tires. The project, carried out in collaboration with CalRecycle and Caltrans, tests new technology to develop longer-lasting and cost-effective road surfaces for future use.  UC Davis
