CRIME NEWS

  • A 19-year-old man accused of the Davis Picnic Day shooting appeared in court on May 28 and had his bail kept at $45,000 with added conditions—he must allow personal and electronic searches for firearms and avoid known gang members—while facing charges for possessing a firearm, an assault weapon, and two extra gun-related felonies, with a follow-up hearing set for June 23.  Davis Vanguard
  • At Yolo County Superior Court, testimony showed that Carlos Dominguez—charged with two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and various enhancements—exhibited erratic behavior while forensic psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Weiner confirmed he suffers from schizophrenia.  Davis Vanguard

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study published in Ecosphere by University of California, Davis researchers found that many monarch butterflies in Bay Area gardens are breeding year-round on native and non-native milkweeds and remain separate from the migratory groups. The study said planting native milkweeds supports local wildlife but does not change the fate of migratory monarchs — and it was funded by Google.  UC Davis
  • Scientists from UC Davis reported that steps to lower invasive bullfrogs' numbers are letting native northwestern pond turtles return to Yosemite National Park — the loud bullfrog calls heard before have quieted. The research shows that managing invasive species is helping the park’s natural balance.  The Davis Enterprise
