CRIME NEWS

  • At a May 29 hearing in Yolo County Superior Court, Judge Clara Levers denied an unhoused, mentally ill man’s request for release on supervised own recognizance, keeping bail at ($5,000 for new charges and $1,000 for previous ones) as he is set to appear on June 6 in Department 10.  Davis Vanguard
  • Carlos Reales Dominguez, accused in a 2023 stabbing spree in Davis and facing two counts of murder plus additional charges, testified about disturbing hallucinations and memory gaps during his trial yesterday—while cross-examination by the district attorney led to repeated objections and evidentiary rulings.  Davis Vanguard

CULTURE NEWS

  • Davis Science Café will host a session with a biologist to celebrate Pride Month on Wednesday, June 11 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at G Street WunderBar—downtown Davis is set to welcome local attendees.  The Davis Enterprise

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two middle-school robotics teams from Davis — Chewbotca and Fibotnacci — competed at the VEX IQ Robotics Middle School World Championship from May 12th to 14th at the Kay venue. They made strong showings that highlighted the talent of local students in robotics.  The Davis Enterprise
  • Avantika Gokulnatha, the top graduating senior at UC Davis, will receive the University Medal and her Bachelor of Science in genetics and genomics at a commencement ceremony at Golden 1 Center on June 13-15; she volunteered with local seniors, worked in research labs, and led free medical clinics to help underserved communities. The San Jose native has accepted a Fulbright award and will study aging at the Max Planck Institute for the Biology of Ageing in Germany during her gap year — a step toward her goal of transforming how we manage aging.  UC Davis
  • UC Davis Summer Sessions will launch June 13 with nearly 14,400 undergraduates enrolled—a 9% increase from last year—and offer over 700 courses across two sessions and a special session with expanded virtual classes and co-curricular activities including a new writing academy; registration for Session I closes June 27 and Session II closes Aug. 8.  UC Davis
  • The Campus Community Book Project has chosen Solito: A Memoir — a story of a 9-year-old’s journey from El Salvador to the U.S. to reunite with his parents — as its 2025-26 title. The campus will host programming on belonging that will culminate in a March 10 talk by the author at the Mondavi Center.  UC Davis

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at UC Davis found that video telehealth visits improved care for cats with arthritis. The study showed that over 95% of pet owners would pay for the service and used six video calls over four months to offer advice on home changes—like raised food dishes—to help reduce the cats’ discomfort.  UC Davis
  • Professor Aldrin Gomes and 36 UC Davis students published a book on June 3 that explains how ibuprofen eases pain while raising risks such as stroke and heart attack. The book shows safe use and natural alternatives and is available as an e-book, paperback + or hardcover formats.  UC Davis
