- ➤ Charles Melton, a 2008 UC Davis graduate and public policy leader, was appointed as a UC Alumni Regent on July 1 to serve a two-year term representing more than 2 million alumni. He succeeded Debby Stegura and said he will listen to alumni and help guide UC decisions. UC Davis
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A study from UC Davis shows that jewelflowers spreading from the desert Southwest millions of years ago now seek warmer, drier microclimates (published July 1 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) rather than adapting to overall annual climates. Researchers used nearly 2,000 herbarium specimens (dried plant samples) to track the timing and local conditions of the plants’ growth. UC Davis

- ➤ The proposed federal Medicaid cuts in the Big Beautiful Bill could force California counties to spend over $1 billion to keep behavioral health services—potentially leaving hundreds of thousands without access to mental health and substance use treatment. Davis Vanguard
- ➤ Davis city officials reviewed residents' concerns about the daytime Respite Center at 530 L Street, noting increased safety issues and public disturbances since it opened in February 2020. Acting City Manager Kelly Stachowicz said that while the update was for the record, a broader reassessment of homelessness services is scheduled for September — a plan that aims to balance the needs of unhoused residents with neighborhood safety.
