- ➤ Meals on Wheels Yolo County partnered with GroundGame.Health to expand meal delivery and support services for isolated seniors in Yolo and Northern California. The new system uses the Implify platform (which streamlines volunteer scheduling and client outreach) to help serve more than 1,000 seniors daily. Davis Vanguard
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UC Davis offered admission to 55,739 undergraduates for fall, including a record 45,963 first-year offers on July 28 and 9,776 transfer offers. The university plans to enroll about 40,900 students overall, drawing many from California and beyond — the data also shows more first-generation and low-income offers — as it prepares for future growth. - ➤ UC Davis faculty and staff received several awards this week. Assistant professor Julian Panetta won an NSF CAREER Award for his computer research and Luis Peña-Lévano’s lab earned World Best Case at an IFAMA conference—Student Housing and Dining Services received two NACUFS awards—while professor Subhash Risbud became a Distinguished Life Member by ACerS and professor Biswanath Mukherjee earned the IEEE Eric E. - ➤ The City of Davis has launched a multi-year update to its General Plan and will host a community workshop at the Davis Senior Center from 6 to 8 p.m. on August 13 to gather resident input on housing, transportation, and environmental challenges—this feedback will help shape the city's future development over coming years. - ➤ The ARC will be closed on the mornings of August 19th, 21st, and 22nd for an active shooter training exercise led by UC Davis and Davis police and fire departments. Setup begins at 7 a.m.—the facility will reopen at 1 p.m. while vehicles in Lot 25 and behind the ARC limit parking. UC Davis
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UC Davis researchers completed an experiment at The Color Lab where student Veronica Then and others did public speaking and math tasks under different ambient lighting to see how colors affect stress—amber light showed the best results in reducing stress hormones. The team is planning to work with industry partners to use these findings in new lighting systems for hospitals and in a table lamp available in the fall. UC Davis
