Good morning, Davis. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 8th of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • An unhoused deaf woman facing two felony charges was granted supervised release by Yolo County Superior Court last Thursday—she objected to HART’s closed captioning service and asked for an alternative provider. The judge’s order requires her to avoid Yolo County vehicles, use Yolo buses if needed, and attend a pre-hearing conference on Sept. 4.  Davis Vanguard

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study by a UC Davis economist shows that a 12.5% tariff could cut the U.S. trade deficit by 13% and boost economic welfare by 2.15%, though global supply chains and possible retaliation may cancel these benefits—smaller trade partners and lower-income households could face higher costs.  UC Davis

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After serving as interim chief for over a year, Nathaniel Hartinger has been chosen to lead the UC Davis Fire Department effective Monday, Aug. 11 — following a competitive national search that recognized his 25 years of service and strong community ties. He will be sworn in later that evening to formally begin his role.  UC Davis
