Meals on Wheels Yolo County is celebrating its 50th anniversary amid challenges as its service has grown from parishioners preparing meals at St. John’s Church of Christ in Woodland — to an institutional facility that now feeds more seniors.

A new Mexican restaurant, Tres Hermanas, opened in Davis after founders Reyna and Sergio met at a wedding in Mexico—bringing a fresh dining option downtown.

Starting this fall, Latitude Restaurant will offer breakfast from 8:30 a.m. with a new global menu while Spokes and Scrubs Cafe unveil updated menus based on student feedback; Coffee House will start a construction project lasting ten months to expand its western patio without affecting current seating—funded by ASUCD and fee funds. These changes will give campus residents improved dining options.

Kate Scow, professor emeritus at UC Davis, said that soil is alive and a key part of Earth’s biodiversity—vital for cleaning water and helping crops grow.

Her research showed that soil microbes play a central role in crop production and that many agricultural soils are in deep trouble.

Researchers at UC Davis studied how our brains focus before we see things by using EEG and machine learning on 25 volunteers and found that the brain first pays attention to a general trait then sharpens its focus on one detail (240 ms for broad focus; 400 ms for narrow focus).

The study published Aug. 19 may help scientists learn more about attention problems.

Valley fever, a disease caused by a soil fungus, has increased across the arid West as climate change creates conditions for more cases, with California reporting nearly 12,500 cases in 2024 and 5,500 in the first half of 2025.

At UC Davis Health, doctors and veterinarians are treating both people and dogs and are studying dog cases to help predict the spread (research on new treatments and vaccines is underway).
