COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Crêpe Bistro closed permanently at the Silo after operator Michel Bloch retired this summer, ending 27 years of service that fed about 300 students daily. Dining Services is exploring options for the empty space—a new plan for campus dining will be in place for fall.  The California Aggie

CULTURE NEWS

  • Violet Zanzot’s column explains how code-switching makes people change the way they speak to fit into different groups—this shift in language can lead to a mix of identities. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seven thousand two hundred University of California research and public service workers voted to form a new union when 3,080 voted yes to 612 no in early September— the union will bargain with UC this fall.  The California Aggie

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The UC Davis Fire Department swore in Nathaniel Hartinger as chief on August 11—he served as interim chief since last October after his predecessor faced criminal charges. Hartinger is a long-time fireman who will work to improve outreach and manage the department’s nearly 60 employees.  The California Aggie
  • Earlier this year on May 20, Davis City Council held a special meeting to present the Golden Heart Awards and the Thong Hy Huynh Memorial Awards, recognizing community members for their service, resilience, and commitment to social justice. The awards honored students like Jonah Spang and Camila Pastor, community members Dillan Horton and Ann Block, and organizations such as the Davis Night Market and Delta of Venus cafe—each acknowledged for making Davis a better place.  The California Aggie
  • On Wednesday, the Davis Planning Commission was introduced to historic resources management and set a General Plan update subcommittee—this step marks its effort to include historic factors in future planning.  The Davis Enterprise
  • Yolo County prosecutors led by Jeff Reisig are fighting compassionate release for dying inmates like 70-year-old Howard Wilbanks, who is set to leave Solano State Prison after his doctors confirmed his terminal lung cancer.
