Good morning, Davis. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 1st of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • New federal policies have increased immigration enforcement and led to family separations as UC Davis students report that immigrant communities face racial profiling — sparking fear and forcing some to hide their culture — and causing deep emotional stress. These changes have impacted community trust and challenged how immigrant families live and support one another.  The California Aggie
  • For the third year, Davis Parks and Community Services Department & Yolo County Housing are hosting summer recreational programming for children at Davis Migrant Center.  The Davis Enterprise

ECONOMY NEWS

  • UCD has developed the Leaf Monitor tool that uses artificial intelligence — predictive modeling to give farmers real-time information on nutrition and leaf traits for measuring crop health. The tool is expected to help farmers make better decisions in the upcoming season.  The Davis Enterprise

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Davis college students learn that their old hometown habits shape how they feel in their new campus life. The column shows that each student brings a different story into the mix—changing what it means to feel at home.  The California Aggie
  • UC Davis student government ASUCD helps students by running many campus services—like bus transit and the Coffee House—and uses a $22 million budget this academic year. It is led by elected and appointed students and employs more than 1,000 people.  The California Aggie
  • Jonna Mazet, the vice provost of Grand Challenges, will retire at the end of 2025 after 30 years at UC Davis, leaving a strong legacy in global health and research. Her work in animal and human disease research (including creating the One Health Institute) has earned national awards and changed how scientists study diseases that pass from animals to people.  UC Davis
  • UC Davis is continuing a $25 million AB94 Seismic Improvement project that began fall 2024 to improve safety and create a new plaza at the Social Sciences and Humanities Building—nicknamed DeathStar. Campus officials said one bike lane remains open for pedestrians while they work with campus partners to reopen the obstructed bike path by the end of November.  The California Aggie
  • UC Davis Distinguished Professor Emeritus Ning Pan—an influential textile engineering expert who invented the PhabrOmeter—died on Sept. 7 at age 72 due to ongoing health issues. He was respected as a teacher and mentor who guided generations of students.  The California Aggie
  • Miguel Craven, a current UC Davis grad student, is stepping into his role as student regent-designate to represent 280,000 UC students—he will tackle issues like student housing and federal research funding cuts and join Chancellor May on Face to Face With Chancellor May this month.  UC Davis

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UC Davis researchers have created an online tool — the Byproduct Database — that tracks food scraps from crops like tomatoes, almonds, pistachios and pomegranates and suggests ways to upcycle these materials. The tool, funded by a Resnick Agricultural Innovation Research Fund grant, will help entrepreneurs and producers reduce waste and explore new revenue streams.  UC Davis

HEALTH NEWS

  • UC Davis experts are using Artificial Intelligence to study over 900 wildlife viruses and 500,000 animal samples to predict which virus might cause a future pandemic—this project will combine data from BEACON, VISTA and CEPI to help officials spot and prevent outbreaks.  The California Aggie
  • Researchers at Davis tested psilocybin on mouse mothers and found the drug increased anxiety and depression symptoms as the mothers spent much less time with their babies. The study showed that the offspring of these mothers also displayed signs of worry and sadness+ raising concerns about using psilocybin for postpartum care.  UC Davis

SPORTS NEWS

  • UC Davis alum Lan Larison signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent and was guaranteed $175,000—he broke his foot in a preseason game against the Washington Commanders and was placed on injured reserve, so he will miss the season.  The California Aggie
