COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Davis Friends Meeting, known as the Quakers, is hosting a public panel discussion and community forum on homelessness in Davis on October 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Davis Quaker Meeting House on 345 L St—panelists include historian Rick Moniz, Alfred Melbourne of Three Sisters Gardens, homeless advocate Geoff Rohde, and director Vernon of the Respite Center.  Davis Vanguard

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UC Davis earned $961 million in external research awards for fiscal year 2024-25—money received from various sources—and the funding supports a broad range of research to transform lives and communities—efforts that strengthen the university's academic work.  The Davis Enterprise
  • The UC Davis Art/Science Fusion Program has been selected to lead a project where undergraduate students combine science and art by creating ceramic-mosaic installations for permanent display in public spaces.  The Davis Enterprise

FINANCE NEWS

  • The Vanguard is asking Davis residents for donations to help raise $2,000 this week to pay off bills from a recent legal battle, and the group said that every contribution will support its work to hold power accountable.  Davis Vanguard

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Five city commissions met Wednesday night at the Community Chambers to review changes to Measure J/R/D, a law that requires voter approval for converting open space to urban use. Their feedback will help the City Council draft ballot language to ease housing rules so Davis can meet state housing mandates — a move that comes with tight cost and timeline pressures.  Davis Vanguard
  • Yesterday, UC President James B. Milliken sent a letter saying federal investigations and oversight have created big challenges with funding and jobs at campuses, including issues at UC Berkeley. He said the University is meeting legal rules from a settlement + working to protect its research, education, and people.  UC Davis
