Good morning, Davis. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 5th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • STEAC expanded its Food Packs for Kids Campaign to deliver over 400 food packs each week to children facing food insecurity in Yolo County during a fall run from Aug. 18 to Sept. 19 — a jump from the original 25 packs distributed weekly — by partnering with DJUSD, local volunteers and community sponsors.  The California Aggie

CULTURE NEWS

  • Natalie Salter presents three autumn reading picks—Wuthering Heights, A Darker Shade of Magic, and The Haunting of Hill House—ideal for fall quarter as they blend gothic romance, magic, and ghostly mysteries for a cozy season. These novels offer Davis readers a mix of eerie tales and adventurous stories to enjoy while the weather cools.  The California Aggie
  • Shields Library is showing an exhibit of nearly 100 photographs by union organizer David Bacon that capture the lives and struggles of Northern California farmworkers—highlighting low wages, tough living conditions, and community strength. The exhibit, organized by the UC Davis Labor and Community Center, remains on view until Dec. 14 and includes a photojournalism workshop on Nov. 12 for local students interested in documentary work.  The California Aggie

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Davis-Berkeley shuttle that connected UC Davis and UC Berkeley ended service on Sept. 2 due to low ridership and high operating costs—leaving students and university departments to look for new travel options.  The California Aggie
  • UC Davis has placed sidewalk signs that explain free speech rules, showing dos and don'ts so that students and visitors know when and where they can express themselves—helping keep campus order. These signs clearly detail campus guidelines for speech on campus.  The Davis Enterprise
  • Incoming UC Davis professor Brenna Mockler studies little red dots in images from the James Webb Space Telescope that may show early supermassive black holes feeding fast—she hopes her work will explain how these black holes grew so quickly.  The California Aggie
  • Aggie Compass has reopened its expanded Basic Needs Center in the old pantry room at Memorial Union to provide private meeting spaces and centralize supplies — a change that unites case management staff and peer navigators — and the center will host a Basic Needs Fair on Oct. 17.  The California Aggie
  • UC Davis has split the Office of Student Support and Judicial Affairs into two departments—Student Conduct and Integrity for discipline and the Office of Student Support for case management—to reduce stigma and clarify roles for students. The changes, driven by student feedback, now see both groups operating in the former OSSJA offices on the third floor of Dutton Hall with further structure adjustments expected next year.  The California Aggie

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City of Davis is considering modifying Measure J to let developers qualify for exemptions (affordable housing, climate mitigation, community benefits or an Urban Limit Line) as state housing officials warned the city after reviewing its progress in meeting regional targets. Officials say the changes could ease the current voter-controlled growth system amid tighter enforcement from state regulators.  Davis Vanguard
  • Former Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg spoke at a Pi Sigma Alpha fireside chat at UC Davis—he shared his public service story and stressed that government must help those without a voice. He recalled pushing for disability access at UC Davis Law School and forming bipartisan plans during financial crises.  The California Aggie

HEALTH NEWS

  • Molly Thompson writes a personal column recalling her struggle with anorexia during her early days at UC Davis and advises new students to care for their health. She warns that college stress can lead to dangerous habits + urges freshmen to build healthier routines.  The California Aggie
