CULTURE NEWS

  • Students at UC Davis share mixed views about the town, with some worried it will be too quiet and others enjoying local music, food, and nearby outdoor places—showing that the hidden charm of Davis comes with a lively community spirit.  The California Aggie
  • The Shinkoskey Noon Concerts brought free live music to the Ann E. Pitzer Center when the Ars Pacifica Trio performed in October—giving Davis residents a chance to enjoy quality concerts. Planned shows on Nov. 6 and Nov. 13 will offer more free music experiences on campus.  The California Aggie
  • On Oct. 24, the Acme Rocket Quintet played at Delta of Venus and brought jazz+blues sounds back to Davis, reflecting a return that started with a 2022 reunion. The band, including longtime members like Roger Kunkel and Rusi Gustafson, honors Davis’ college radio roots and creative spirit.  The California Aggie

ECONOMY NEWS

  • An analysis by Economic & Planning Systems found that the proposed Village Farms development in Davis could add 701 new students to DJUSD and build 1,800 homes to ease enrollment declines and high housing costs. The mix of high-end and affordable units may shift the local market toward equilibrium—if the project moves forward as planned.  Davis Vanguard

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is scheduled to speak with Chancellor Gary May at UC Davis on Nov. 18—tickets sold out on Oct. 3. The Mondavi Center may release extra tickets if additional seats become available.  The California Aggie
  • A study presented at a European conference found that letting the mind wander can boost creativity, especially for people with ADHD, according to UC Davis professors Dean Simonton and Julie Schweitzer. They say that while distractions can make studying harder, unfocused thinking can lead to new ideas — a benefit that may spark creative breakthroughs — and further research will explore this link.  The California Aggie
  • Graduate students in the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department held a Friday Lunch Talk on Oct. 24 at 12 p.m. — speakers Nathalie Redick and Lucy Lu presented data from recent research cruises that improved earthquake and tsunami hazard assessments in the region.  The California Aggie
  • The UC Davis School of Medicine is expanding its three-year pathway program into rural counties in Northern California—aimed at filling shortages of specialized doctors. The program will help meet the growing need for healthcare in these areas.  The Davis Enterprise
  • UC Davis was honored with 36 'Best of District VII' awards by CASE to recognize its creative projects that tell the campus story — including online magazines and video campaigns. In July the campus also received 10 CASE Circle of Excellence Awards — three of which were Grand Gold honors.  UC Davis

HEALTH NEWS

  • UC Davis is teaming with a group of partners on the BRAVE project to build biosensors and a risk model that help decide when buildings should filter or bring in fresh air to stop germs and keep people healthy. The team is planning to test the system in local childcare centers and other buildings to show it can balance cleaner air with saving energy.  The California Aggie

  • Students in Davis are exploring fall activities by leaf peeping at the Arboretum and visiting nearby pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and haunted houses — options range from quiet nature walks to events with maps provided for safe navigation — making it a season full of outdoor fun and local excitement.  The California Aggie

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Queen Kapiolani Regional Park in Honolulu, UC Davis Aggies secured a first-place finish in the men's 8K race of the Big West Cross Country Championship on Oct. 31 — with Muhammed Ahmed finishing first and the team earning a No. 2 ranking. The Aggies will now prepare for the NCAA West Regionals on Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. in Sacramento.  The California Aggie
  • The UC Davis men’s tennis team is beginning its preseason with tournaments and fundraisers as captain Lucas Bollinger leads a largely lowerclassman roster—Bollinger reached the finals at the Big West Invite and the team is now heading to the San Diego Classic from Nov. 4 to 8.  The California Aggie
