ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Engineers at UC Davis invented a device that uses a small temperature difference between the warm ground and the cold of space to generate mechanical power at night. Described Nov 12 in Science Advances, the Stirling engine produced 400 milliwatts per square meter in year-long tests—offering a potential way to ventilate greenhouses and buildings.  UC Davis
  • A study published in Science Advances by UCLA and UC Davis researchers on Nov. 12 found that every inch drop in annual rainfall increased wildlife conflicts by 2—3% as drought drives carnivores like bobcats, coyotes, mountain lions, and black bears closer to homes. The research analyzed seven years of data from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and suggests that designing climate-resilient landscapes may reduce human—wildlife conflicts.  UC Davis
