Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 18th of November.
Good morning, Davis.
🏘️ Community
Maria Ressa warned that online lies can hurt our trust in facts — and the Davis Vanguard is launching a community journalism project so local residents can report on city issues like housing and schools.
The project invites anyone with curiosity and integrity to help build a network that keeps our local news true.
🎓 Education
UC Davis celebrated the opening of the Maria Manetti Shrem Institute for Sustainable Design, Fashion and Textiles on November 13, where a ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the new hub for wearable technology combined with sustainable design—aiming to inspire students and faculty in creating innovative, responsible designs. The institute is led by Associate Professor Gözde Göncü-Berk and builds on a historic $20 million gift that supports eight new art and design endowments.
🌲 Environment
Scientists from UC Davis, UC Berkeley and IGI published research showing that red seaweed fed to cows cut methane by 60% and increased feed efficiency by up to 74% over a 14-day trial — the study revealed gene changes in cow gut microbes and identified a bacterium that uses excess hydrogen. These findings could lead to engineering cattle that naturally produce less methane, offering a climate-smart solution.
