EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gözde Göncü-Berk was named the inaugural Maria Manetti Shrem Endowed Chair in Design, Fashion and Textiles and became the founding director of the new institute at UC Davis on Nov 13th—her work on soft wearable systems aims to enhance health and performance.  UC Davis
  • UC Davis researchers found that chemical switches which control genes in cabernet sauvignon have remained stable for centuries—analyzing detailed genome maps to show that the grape's clones still carry a molecular memory of their parent varieties that may guide future breeding for resilience. The study helps explain how long-lived crops like cabernet sauvignon adapt to stress over time.  UC Davis
  • UC Davis will host its 112th Picnic Day on April 18 with the theme 'The Journey Home: Destination Davis,' announced by student organizers on November 17. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yolo County Sustainability Division is seeking seven community members to join its Climate Action Commission—an advisory group that will guide local climate action plans.  The Davis Enterprise
  • UCD scientists discovered a microbial blueprint that may help lower methane emissions from cows, which belch about 200 pounds each year. Methane traps heat 27 times more effectively than carbon dioxide—researchers say this finding could lead to climate-smart cattle practices.  The Davis Enterprise

HEALTH NEWS

  • UC Davis research published in the journal Animals found that hay feeders, giant rubber activity balls, and shatter-proof mirrors in stalls help reduce frustration behaviors and lower health risks in horses. The study observed nine competition horses over 720 hours of video—showing that these enrichment tools improve both mental and physical well-being.  UC Davis
