Good morning, Davis. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 29th of November.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Breath(e): Toward Climate and Social Justice is on display at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum from Aug. 7 to today — the show uses recycled materials like oil spill remnants and reclaimed furniture to tie art to climate change and social fairness. Curated by Glenn Kaino and Mika Yoshitake, the exhibit invites visitors to explore links between nature and community.  The California Aggie
  • UC Davis alumna Lily Therens, now a Sacramento-based freelance illustrator, has painted a series of bright new murals on display at The Davis Collection shopping center. The murals were created with city guidance to avoid overused symbols and to honor local indigenous practices — offering a fresh view of Davis.  The California Aggie

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Willett fifth-grade students earned first place in the 2025 Future Problem Solving World Solutions Challenge on Rising Sea Levels—where teams from many countries competed with solutions to rising sea levels.  The Davis Enterprise
  • A new California law encourages schools to use phonics to help fourth and eighth graders meet reading standards. Governor Newsom approved AB 1454 — the bill will provide funding to shift to a phonics-based program to raise literacy scores.  The California Aggie
  • International students at the university often group with peers from their own country, leaving some students feeling isolated. The report explains that this behavior is a natural response to being in a new place — a way to find comfort — and not meant as a personal slight.  The California Aggie
  • At the Oct. 30 ASUCD Senate meeting, representatives from the Manetti Shrem Museum presented plans for a 7-foot bronze sculpture by Woody De Othello that will be installed in winter or spring quarter and proposed jazz-themed events—Senate members also received reports from Aggie Reuse and Unitrans and passed a resolution to support international student services.  The California Aggie
