COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Friends of the Davis Public Library will hold its monthly book sale starting Friday, Dec 5th—from noon to 7 p.m. in the Blanchard Room of the Stephens, inviting local readers to browse a variety of books.  The Davis Enterprise

CULTURE NEWS

  • UC Davis students said that decorating for the holidays creates warm memories and brings families together with personal traditions. Some students recalled hanging heirloom ornaments on their trees while others noted time and cost issues affect how they celebrate.  The California Aggie

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study from UC Davis found that California’s $1 billion tomato industry handled hotter weather with only small increases in spoilage—losses went from about 1% to 2% even when trucks moved slowly in heavy traffic. The research looked at 1.4 million truckloads from 2011 to 2020 and shows that an efficient supply chain can lessen damage from rising temperatures.  UC Davis

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new research project with federal money at UC Davis will try to capture rare earth elements from acidic wastewater from mines and factories using a process based on living things. Led by Assistant Professor Yi Wang—using AI to design microbes that work in acid—the team will lower chemical use and waste and help strengthen the clean-energy supply chain.  UC Davis
  • The Yolo Bird Alliance will host its Bird Identification Workshop at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 — part of the preparation for the 55th annual Putah Creek Christmas Bird Count — to help local birdwatchers identify birds in the area.  The Davis Enterprise

HEALTH NEWS

  • UC Davis completed contact tracing after a person with active tuberculosis was found on campus — officials in partnership with Yolo County identified those with 12 hours of exposure between mid-October and mid-November who now need TB evaluations.  UC Davis
